Biography

Born near Carlisle, the son of a cotton mill owner, Carrick became a self-taught miniature painter. He left home and took employment with a chemist in Carlisle. But his heart was in miniature painting and he acquired a reputation in the north painting, among other portraits, one of Charles Kean, who was then beginning to make a name for himself as a provincial actor. Carrick moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then to London, where he exhibited miniatures virtually every year from 1841 to 1863.
