Biography

Hailstone studied at Goldsmiths’ School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. He worked up a successful portrait practice before joining the Auxiliary Fire Service in the Second World War, when he painted scenes of the Blitz. In 1944 he went to South-East Asia to paint Lord Mountbatten. He started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1939; his portrait of Sir Laurence Olivier was shown there in 1969.
