Augusto Passaglia was born at Lucques in 1838. He was a pupil of P. Martini and was appointed Professor at the Florentine Academy in 1875. He was very highly thought of in his day and, in 1887, he won the competition to decorate the three pairs of doors of Florence Cathedral. Apart from many commissions for religious subjects, he sculpted a likeness of Victor Emanuel II, now at Lucca. He died at Florence in 1918.
