Biography

Richard Westall was born at Hertford. From the age of thirteen he was apprenticed for a period of five years to a silver engraver. On the expiry of his apprenticeship he entered the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited regularly at the Academy for over 50 years up until the year of his death, and was elected Academician in 1794. His primary professional engagements were making watercolours and illustrating books, but he also painted in oils, working for Macklin and for Alderman Boydell.
