Biography
Thomas Worlidge was born in Peterborough but came to work in London. There, he became a pupil of the Italian painter, A. M. Grimaldi. The Garrick Club’s oil portrait of Garrick as “Tancred” is in Worlidge’s ‘grand manner.’ He also worked as an engraver, producing prints in the style of Rembrandt. Worlidge was noted for his small portrait drawings in pencil or sanguine. He worked a good deal in Bath as well as London. He died in Hammersmith in September 1766 and is buried in Hammersmith parish church.
