Biography

Born Louisa Simeon in 1797, probably at Bath, she married the actor William S. Chatterley (1787-1822) in 1814 and made her debut at the Lyceum Theatre in July 1816 as Harriet in “Is He Jealous?”. She appeared at the Olympic in 1820 and in 1821 acted Julia in “The Rivals” at the Haymarket. She made her debut at Covent Garden on 6 November 1821 as Kate Hardcastle in “She Stoops to Conquer”. Her husband died in 1822, and in 1830 she married a Mr Place and retired from the stage. But she eventually returned, joining Wigan’s company at the Olympic. At the Adelphi she acted in “Born with Good Luck” in 1856 and in “The French Lady’s Maid” in 1858. She died in 1866. She had no extraordinary talents, it is said, but she did play well her line of characters in genteel comedy. In addition to G0111 and G0112, she was pictured as Marguerite in “Raymond and Agnes” in an anonymous plate to “The British Stage” in 1820.
