Biography

The singer Miss Graddon, born at Taunton, Somersetshire, in 1804, appeared at some provincial concert rooms before making her debut at Vauxhall in 1822. In October 1824 she sang Susanna in “The Marriage of Figaro” at Drury Lane, and 10 November 1824 she was heard as Linda in “Der Freischutz” (G0268). In 1854 a portrait of her in this character was published on the title page of sheet music for a polka, ‘La Bal Costumé,’ which she composed. Other roles in which she appeared at Drury Lane included Amanda in “The Fall of Algiers” (1825), Zulema in “Abu Hassan” and Maria in “Two Houses of Granada” (1826). She soon married Alexander Gibbs, of the firm of Graddon and Gibbs, makers of pianofortes. Probably she was related to the partner Graddon. As Mrs Gibbs she appeared in theatres and concert halls in London, Dublin and provincial towns until 1854, when she either retired or died.
