Biography

Julia Emilie Neilson was an English actress and theatre manager. She was initially enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, studying piano at first and later singing. However, having gained some experience in amateur dramatics she was auditioned by W.S. Gilbert, who encouraged her to pursue a career in theatre. Neilson was later invited to become a member of Herbert Beerbohm Tree's company, with which she worked for five years first on tour and later at the Haymarket Theatre. In 1891 she married fellow company actor, Fred Terry (1863–1933), from whom she had two children: Philis and Dennis, who also became actors. Julia Neilson-Terry enjoyed a very successful theatrical carreer acting on many London stages.
