[The head of a man in a smoking cap, whom Mathews thought to be Bullock, has been painted over another portrait, apparently showing a woman in a low-cut bodice, her sleeves having flounces at the elbows. It is tempting to believe that Hall's engraving, with its attribution to Hogarth, was taken from a more resolved work than this curious plimpsest.]
