Hare, standing three-quarter-length, wears a morning suit with a grey waistcoat and brownish trousers, and holds a book in his left hand. There is a framed print of Reynolds's Thrale portrait of David Garrick (see G0241), a reference to Hare's status as one of the leaders of his profession. See also G0323.
Sir John became a member of the Garrick Club in 1868.
