Exhibition history

1833 London, Queen's Bazaar, Oxford Street, "Mr Mathews's Gallery of Theatrical Portraits" (28) 1951 London, Tate Gallery, "Pictures from the Garrick Club" (38) 1957 London, Guildhall Art Gallery, "William Hogarth"

The sitter, holding a book in her lap and rests her left arm on the back of her chair, wears a large panniered dress, orange-brown at the back with a train, a skirt shot green and pink, and a white lace-trimmed wrap.
If this picture could be dated to the 1720s, an attribution to Hogarth on stylistic grounds might be entertained. However, the costume is later, and the age of the sitter, presumably correctly identified by Mathews, would date the picture about 1770.
