Sir Johnston Forbes Robertson (1853-1937), was considered to be one of the great Hamlets of his time. As a young man he trained as an artist and continued to paint throughout his acting career, painting portraits of many of his contemporary actors. This self portrait depicts him possibly wearing a Garrick tie (he became a member in 1903), and possibly dates to the last decades of his life.
