Oil lamp used by Dame Peggy Ashcroft in "Romeo and Juliet"
Juliet : Romeo and Juliet
Presented to the Garrick Club by Dr T R Williams in 1991
The oil lamp was used in the performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at the New Theatre Oxford, 1932. This production was John Gielgud's first, and can be considered as a sketch for his successful production of the same play at the New Theatre in London, again with Peggy Ashcroft, three years later.
