TREVOR / AND THE REMAINDER ACQUIRED IN 1917, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A NUMBER OF ADMIRERS OF / DAVID GARRICK." "PRESENTED TO THE GARRICK CLUB BY THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM."

Provenance

Presented to the Garrick Club by the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Photograph of the furniture of David Garrick's bedroom formerly in his villa at Hampton. The bed was given to the Victoria & Albert Museum by Mr. H. E. Trevor, a direct descendant of David Garrick's brother, George, in 1906 and then the remainder acquired in 1917, with the assistance of a number of admirers of David Garrick.

The bed was made in the workshops of Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), one of the most influential British furniture-makers, and he also supplied the other painted fittings in Garrick's bedroom. The decoration was inspired by Chinese wallpaper and was enhanced by the prospect of Garrick's garden with its mature willow tree.

The bed is currently on display in the British Galleries at the V&A. The present hangings are reproductions made in 2001, but the originial Indian Chintz hangings, which were presented to Mrs Garrick in 1775 by friends in Calcutta, are still in the V&A collection.

In the photograph, there is a four-poster bed, two cupboards, one wardrobe with drawers, a dressing table and mirror, five chairs, and a wash basin.
