Photograph of Johnston Forbes-Robertson and Gertrude Elliott in George Bernard Shaw's play 'Caesar and Cleopatra'. They are both in costume, Forbes-Robertson is on the right and holds a bird-shaped headdress over Gertrude who faces him.
Shaw wrote the play in 1898. It was first performed in a single staged reading by Mrs Patrick Campbell's company at Newcastle upon Tyne on 15 March 1899, to secure the copyright. The play was then produced in New York in 1906 and in London at the Savoy Theatre in 1907. Shaw wrote the part of Caesar for Shakespearean actor Forbes-Robertson, who played it opposite his wife Gertrude Elliott at the Savoy Theatre.
Photographed by Lizzie Caswall Smith in her studio, c.1907.
