Green marble socle 24 diam, largely hidden, on wooden base 8 x 27.5 x 27.5; on green marble plinth 122 x 36 x 35.7; base of plinth 26 x 53 x 53
“Courteney Pollock” (behind left shoulder); “HENRY IRVING / BORN FEBRUARY 6TH 1838 / DIED OCTOBER 13TH 1905 / BY COURTNEY [sic] POLLOCK R. B. A. / PRESENTED TO THE GARRICK CLUB BY SEYMOUR HICKS” (on front of plinth)
Seymour Hicks, by whom presented to the Garrick Club, 1907
There is another cast of this bust in the Russell Coates Art Gallery, Bournemouth.
Since it was presented to the Garrick Club in 1907, S0022 has to be a fairly early work by Courteney Pollock (1877-1943). He did not exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1912; he continued to exhibit until 1920 but none of his sitters were theatrical.
