Vol. IV opens with an autograph letter dated '14th April 1888' signed by Irving's unidentified collaborator and agent in the management of the compilation, setting forth the plan of the work and format of its contents, referring also to 'modern' material altogether excluded but allowed for a fifth volume. - The volume serving as 'Vol. 5' is arranged as an 'Index' to the 4 vols detailing autographs, engravings, portraits, etc.
