Scope and content
The volume is entitled ' Garrick's time piece for tragedy' and has 'Vol. the First' at the foot of the manuscript title page. A note pasted to the front flyleaf and signed by Drinkwater Meadows says: 'I imagine the time set down is that which was occupied by the acting only and not including the music of the entre acts - therefore we may add at least five minutes to each act - that is twenty five minutes for each performance - scenic effects being in Garrick's days, little thought of. Thus Hamlet - 2 hours & 39 minutes - 25 entre acts - 3 hours 4 minutes'.
