Scope and content
Two playbills framed side-by-side rexcording David Garrick's first and last appearances on the stage.
The playbill on the left is for a performance 'At the Playhouse in Tankard Street' Ipswich on 21 July 1741, 'By a Company of Comedians' led by Henry Giffard. The main play was 'The Inconstant' with 'Captain Duretête by Mr Lyddall', in fact David Garrick. The afterpiece was 'Lethe. Or, Æsop in the Sahdes', Garrick's own play, with Giffard as Æsop and 'Ventrebleu and Sir Roger Rakeit, by Mr Lyddall'.
The playbill on the right is for the performance at Drury Lane on 10 June 1776. The main play was 'The Wonder' with David Garrick as Don Felix, followed by 'The Waterman' in which Garrick had no role. The playbill says only 'The last Time of the Company's performing this Season' and makes no mention that this is Garrick's last appearance as a professional actor.
