Dear Sir / I see your great drama "It is never too late to mend" is to be reproduced at the Princess's on Boxing night. I have just finished my engagement at Drury Lane and would ask your kinf interest to procure me the engagement to play "George Fielding". The enclosed letters I once received from you will fully explain the claim I persuade myself I have on your consideration // I need not say that cnstant practice has much improved my style since I had the pleasure of playing the part. / Yours faithfully, Edward Compton / In any case, will you kindly return me your letters which I hope to possess always'.
Accompanied by a typescript letter dated: 20th August, 1973 addressed to: 'W. Clarry Esq. 209 Reculver Road, Herne Bay, Kent, in thanks for his presentation of the letter from Compton, and with some explanation of its derivation and interest, and the fact that Compton (who had had the role in Reade's play earlier) did not secure the part on this occasion.
