Scope and content
Addressed to D.[N?]. Shury Esqr / Henrietta Street / Covent Garden'.
24th Oct. 1820 / Sir / I was yesterday favoured with yours and beg in reply to say that had I any considerable time before, known my services would have been required for the purpose you allude to, I should have been most happy to have done anything to forward the undertaking; particularly as I may truly add there was no person in the profession for whom I entertain'd a higher respect than the late Mr. Rae but the plain fact is that I am not now immediately engaged in a theatrical pursuit, and withal so circumstanced, I am not certain one day, but that the next may oblige me to set off a considerable distance into the country, which I expected would have taken place ere now. Thus situated, believe me it is not in my power to accomplish what my inclinations would very willingly agree to / Sir Your most obt. servant / [signature]. Watermark: 'Ruse & Turners / 1816'
Business not clear and identities likewise: Samson Penley, writer and theatrical figure of the era; Daniel Nathan Shury printer of 7 Berwick Street
