Scope and content

Manuscript. One leaf, mounted. - Letter: 'My dear Broadhurst / I find by a letter received from Mrs Munden this morning that you, as one of the Committee wish my services to aid the benefit of our poor deceased friend Emerys family; I shall most cheerfully lend my assistance and leave this place for that purpose on the night that it is fixed; Be kind enough to request the gentlemen who conduct this business to select something that I am in the habit of performing - if in the farce only I shall have no objection; Drop me a line by return of post what your choice is that I may be au fait; Wishing you every success to the laudable undertaking .../ Brighton / 31st July 1822'. - John Emery (1777-1822) had died on 25th July 1822 leaving a widow and seven orphans in penury, and elderly dependent parents. The theatrical benefit alluded to took place at Covent Garden on August 5th - in the form of 'The Rivals' with a stellar cast: Munden played Sir Anthony Absolute. - Mr Broadhurst listed as one of the subscribers to Emery's benefit was perhaps William Broadhurst, singer, later a founder-member of the Royal General Theatrical Fund in 1839
