Scope and content
ALs in ink, addressed Dec. 13th. Dear Munden [crossed through] / I am as much surpris'd as I am concerned to learn that some necessary regulations in the lesser departments of the Theatre have been carried to an extent as to give my family cause of uneasiness and I beg to assure them if they will specify the instances to me they shall be immediately remov'd having no wish beyond being consider'd their sincere friend and humble ...[excision]'. - Mounted within card; inscribed in ink on verso in another hand: 'A letter from Mr. Lewis the comedian given to me by Mr. J.P. Harley [John Pritt Harley (1786-1858)], for whom I cut off the signature, to place at the bottom of Mr. L's portrait - the letter was given to Mr Harley by Mr Lewis junr - 1820'. - 'Mr Lewis junior: Lewis had three sons, two were involved in the theatre but the youngest, Henry Lewis, appears to have died by 1819 so it is likely that the donor was Thomas Denison Lewis (1787-1849) - see: Highfill, Burnim and Langhans 9, p.288-9. - Name of this subscriber not as yet traced
