Manuscript. 'Sir / I dont understand your presuming to take me to task for not waiting on Miss Beetham [= Mary Matilda Betham (17761852), miniaturist], it was to oblige you and not myself that I took the trouble to sit for my portrait therefore expected no rudeness from you - the last time I saw Miss B-- I told her I was under the necessity of seeing my surgeon every day, and till I had seen him could not leave home - and that I would call and take my chance of her being disengaged and that I should not mind being disappointed - M?? is at liberty to do what she pleases with the portrait but begs you will inform her that I am ready to pay her for her trouble if she wishes it ...' signed: 'J.
