Scope and content

Manuscript. 'Sir / The gentlemanly behaviour I have experienced from you, since I have known Drury Lane Theatre, emboldens me to solicit your advice, on a subject most material to me: - perhaps sir, you are not acquainted with the circumstances respecting my engagements, - I assure you, sir, I sought it not; I was by the proprietors, solicited to send my terms, which they comply'd with; they press'd me to come immediately, as my services were very much wanted that I shou'd instantly be in possession of many of the late Mr. Palmers and likewise most of Mr Wroughton's parts. Nay, I even mention'd some characters such as Charles in the school for scandfal, Beliour, ??, in the jealous wife, to be with an equal respectable line in tragedy ...[details being neglected: ' ... of course if I am not seen in old plays, authors will not suffer me in new ones ... I have a large family with me, have nothing but my profession to depend on - what is to become of me? If you sir will advise me what course I am to take ....' signed: 'Respectful and very humble servant / J. Powell / Saturday, 3 o'clock'.
