Scope and content
The volume contains John Baldwin Buckstone's notes and ideas for characters and plots in the plays he wrote. The front cover bears the date 1830 while the final entries bear dates in the 1840s, although the volume is mostly blank leaves.The final leaves have lists of English, French, Italian, Spanish and German names for characters. The volume has brown paper wrappers and is stitched, with an ink- lettered title, signed by the author. Additional inscriptions: one in an unknown hand: 'Given to Mr. Fred Terry / Nov. 11, 1895'; the second in the hand of A. Forbes Sieveking (1857-1951) identifying the work, and referring to 'a final resting place / in the Library of the Garrick Club'. - Loosely inserted is one further 'Character' in ink; and, the 10-page script of Gratiano in "Merchant of Venice", with a note at the end: 'played with Kean at Hastings'; and identified in a separate hand as being in the hand of Buckstone; embossed stamp with fleur de lys, unidentified wording. - Attached at end is a news cutting of the Times obituary of Mr. Buckstone, 1879
