Scope and content
Playbill for a performance on 19 August 1816, headed 'Private Theatricals'. The first piece was 'The maid and the magpie' followed by 'Ways and means or a trip to Dover'. The performance was a benefit for the Misses Penley and Miss Jonas.
The names of the performers have been added in manuscript alongside their parts. No venue is given but the principal actresses are Mrs and Miss Dawson, Miss Penley, Miss Rosina Penley and Miss Jonas and some of the actors have military titles. This performance may have been given at the English Theatre in Valenciennes during the British army's occupation of France following the final defeat of Napoleon.
