Biography
Abbey was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1860-1871. He was employed by Harper Brothers, who sent him to England in 1878. He settled here for the rest of his life, making a number of visits to the Continent and to the United States. Abbey first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1885 and was elected Academician in 1898. He was noted for his illustrations of historical subjects.
