Biography

Brown was an American by birth. He received some instruction from Gilbert Stuart before coming to London in 1781; he entered the Royal Academy Schools the following year. There, he received his education as an artist from Benjamin West. He executed work for Boydell’s “Shakespeare Gallery”, exhibited at the British Institution and showed a large number of portraits as well as historical and biblical compositions at the Royal Academy from 1782 until the year of his death. His later work often made up for in size what it lacked in quality.
