Biography
Butler won a silver medal at the age of 18 from the Society of Arts and went on the following year to attend the Royal Academy Schools. According to Rupert Gunnis, Butler became a popular portrait-sculptor who achieved excellent likenesses. He exhibited over 100 busts at the Royal Academy between 1828 and 1879, including two busts of Charles Kemble, in 1844 and 1846, sculpted when Kemble would have been about 70.
