Biography
Graves notes two artists by the name of J. W. Childe as exhibitors at the Royal Academy, one showing landscapes from 1798 to 1810 and the other listed as a miniature painter, exhibiting portraits from 1815 until 1853. The DNB, however, states that both are in fact the same man, who adopted miniature painting in the course of his career. Many of his portrait exhibits were of popular actors and actresses of the day. The Garrick Club possesses a series of the actor, Charles James Mathews, in 74 parts.
