Biography
Downman was born in Devonshire but came early to London, where he was a pupil of Benjamin West. He studied at the Royal Academy and became a prolific portrait painter. He worked in oils and made tinted drawings. The tentative attribution to him of the Garrick Club’s G0374 is not convincing.
