Biography
Grisoni, born Pierre Joseph Grison, was a Walloon painter and sculptor, born in Mons, Belgium, in 1699. He studied in Florence and arrived, at age sixteen, with John Talman, the architectural draughtsman, in London. According to an article in “Thieme-Becker” he had little success in England and, after auctioning off his own work in 1728, he returned to Italy within the next year or two and remained there for the rest of his life. The portrait of Colley Cibber, of which there is more than one version, must therefore be an early work.
