Biography
Edwin Long was born at Bath in 1829. He came to London, where he studied at the British Museum and at a private art school. He commenced his career primarily as a portrait painter. He travelled to Spain with John ‘Spanish’ Phillips and initially was much influenced by Velazquez. Later, his religious and eastern subjects met with great success. His chief patroness was Baroness Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906). He painted portraits of the Baroness and of Henry Irving. There was a marked falling off in the quality of his later work.
