Biography
Anna Massey Lea Merritt, who was born in Philadelphia, became the wife of the painter Henry Merritt (1822-1877). She worked in portraiture and as a genre painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1893. Her best-known picture, ‘Love Locked Out,’ which is in the Tate Gallery, is regarded as something of a joke.
