Biography
John Pettie was born in Scotland and went to study at the Trustees’ Academy, Edinburgh, at the age of sixteen, in 1855. There he met W. MacTaggert, and W.Q. Orchardson. He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1860, moving to London two years later. The subjects for his earlier work are frequently historical, of the ‘ripping yarns’ school. Later, he turned more to portraiture. Pettie became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1866 and a full Member seven years later, in 1873.
