Biography
Benjamin Shout and his son, Robert, ran their family business from a yard in Holborn, London. They specialized in monumental masonry, although Robert made a small number of busts and casts. They were responsible for a great deal of sepulchral work, particularly in Sussex. Robert was made Master of the Masons’ Company in 1822. Shelley, writing of Leigh Hunt’s studio in a letter to Maria Gisbourne, states ‘His room no doubt is still adorned with many a cast from Shout’. In 1809, Robert took on his son, Charles Lutwyche Shout, as an apprentice.
