Biography
Thomas Stothard was born at the "Black Horse" on Long Acre in London, although he was sent away to school at the age of five. Having shown a talent for drawing, he was initially apprenticed to designer of patterns for silk; his master died before the end of his term, and with the trade declining he took to drawing flowers for "Town and Country Magazine". This made him known and he was soon employed by Bell, working on his "British Poets", and later for Boydell. He became a student at the Royal Academy, becoming an Academician in 1794, and Librarian in 1812. It is said that he produced upwards of 5000 designs for books, with those produced for Boydell's "Shakespeare" being amongst the most important.
