Biography

Matilda Charlotte Vining, later Mrs. John Wood, was born in Liverpool into a large theatrical family. She worked in the English provinces before going to America in 1854. She was widowed in 1863 before running the Olympic in New York for three years. She returned to London to perform in 1866 then continued to appear in both London and New York. From 1869-1877 she was manager of the St. James's Theatre, London, and from 1888-1891 of the New Royal Court. (See the Oxford Companion to the Theatre. 3rd ed.
