Biography

Russian stage actress. She was one of the original 39 founding members of the Moscow Art Theatre. She trained as an actress at the Philharmonic where the co-founder of MAT, Vladimir Nemorovich-Danchenko, taught acting classes. She appeared in all the original stagings of Chekhov’s work by the Moscow Art Theatre and was particularly successful as Mascha in the ‘The Three Sisters’. She married the author Anton Chekhov in 1900. She remained with the Moscow Art Theatre until she retired.
