Biography

Born, Maria Petrovna Perevostchikova, married name: Alekseyeva, known by her stage name of Maria Lilina, was a Russian actress and one of the founding nine members of the Moscow Art Theatre set up in 1898 by her husband Konstantin Stanislavski. She met Konstantin in an amateur production of ‘Spoiled Darling’ in 1888 and they married in 1889. During her career Maria won praise for her performance as Masha in Chekhov’s 'The Seagull' (1898) and Sonya in 'Uncle Vanya' (1899). After Stanislavski’s death she directed all of his productions.
