Biography
Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, later known as Maxim Gorky was a Russian writer and proponent of Socialism. His work often focused on the hard lives of those on the lower strata of Russian society, whilst highlighting their humanity. He developed friendship with fellow writers Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy, who encouraged his ideas and writings. They were involved with the Moscow Art Theatre and recommended Gorky to Stanislavski. MAT then became a champion of his work producing his plays The Lower Depth in 1902 and The Children of the Sun in 1905.
