Biography
Vera Komissarzhevskaya was the first to perform the role of Nina in Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’ at the Alexandrinsky theatre. In 1904 she opened her own theatre the V. F. Kmoissarzhevskya Dram Theatre and made her stage debut as Nora in Henrik Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’. In 1906, she invited Vsevolod Mayerhold to be director. They had success with Maeterlinck’s ‘Sister Beatrice’, but their differences resulted in her dismissing him a year later. She died in February 1910 after contracting smallpox on tour.
