Son of the actor John Emery (1777-1822), Sam Emery performed in the provinces for several years before appearing at the Lyceum with the Keeleys, originating the parts of Jonas in 'Martin Chuzzlewit', Will Fern in 'The Chimes', and John Peerybingle in 'The Cricket on the Hearth'. He went to the Olympic in 1853 and became lessee of the Marylebone Theatre in 1854. His daughter Isabel Winifred was also an actor. (See the Oxford Companion to the Theatre. 3rd ed.
