Biography

Pattie Oliver was the daughter of a scene-painter, and she appeared on stage for the first time when she was just six years old. She made her London début when she was thirteen. She became the leading actress in comedy and burlesque for several seasons at the Strand Theatre, where her parts included Amy Robsart in Ye Queen, ye Earl, and ye Maiden. Oliver became manager of the New Royalty Theatre in 1866 and opened with a revival of Taylor's The Ticket-of-Leave Man. Later that year she staged the hugely successful burlesque The Latest Edition of Black-Eyed Susan, or, The Little Bill that was Taken Up. The piece had an unprecedented run of over four hundred performances. http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp06042/martha-cranmer-pattie-oliver
