Biography

William Archer was a playwright and an enormously influential drama critic. Born in Scotland, Archer studied law in London but never practiced, choosing to work as a theatre critic instead. Archer held positions at The London Figaro, The World, The Tribune, The Nation, and over the years contributed countless books reviews and articles to the Pall Mall Gazette, Daily Chronicle, Morning Leader, Daily News, and many other newspapers. He is famous for contributing to the translation of Henrik Ibsen's works and for advocating a reform and the improvement of British theatre.
