Van der Mijn was born in Antwerp, one of several children of the flower, history and portrait painter Herman Van der Mijn. Waterhouse suggests that Frans may have assisted his father until the latter’s death in 1741. Herman came to London about 1721, but Frans was running a successful practice in Antwerp from shortly after his father’s death until 1749. He then moved to London, where again he was successful save for the fact that his incessant pipe smoking put off a number of potential clients.
