Biography

James Christie was perhaps the son of James Christie the younger (1773-1831) and the grandson of James Christie the elder (1730-1803), who established the famous auction house in London in 1756. This James Christie and his brother George Henry took in William Manson as a partner, and then when Thomas J. Woods came into the firm in 1859, the name was changed to Christie, Manson and Woods. The third James Christie has two notations in the roll of admissions to the Garrick Club, one on 20 December 1851 and the other on 18 November 1854. Both entries indicate that Christie died in July 1897. But the person in the picture is probably another related Christie.
