Biography

The landscape painter Thomas Creswick was born on 5 February 1881 at Sheffield. At the age of seventeen he had two of his pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy, where for some 30 years he was a regular exhibitor. He was elected to the Academy in 1851. Known as a keen observer of nature in his landscapes, Creswick also designed many book illustrations. At the London International Exhibition of 1873, 109 of his paintings were shown; a catalogue of the exhibition was published by T. O. Barlow. He was elected to the Garrick Club in 1864. Creswick died at his residence in Linden Road, Bayswater, on 28 December 1869 and was buried at Kensal Green. In addition to appearing in O’Neil’s Billiard Room group, his portrait was engraved by M. Jackson, after T. Scott. (DNB)
