Biography

He was born in Jamaica in 1828, the elder son of John Dallas, who was a Jamaican physician of Scottish descent. The family went back to Britain when Dallas was four, and he eventually attended Edinburgh University, where he studied philosophy. He became a journalist, writing numerous articles for a variety of journals and papers, but he was mainly renowned for his articles in “The Times” on biography, politics and literary affairs. He wrote a ‘careful, graceful English’ with profundity. Dallas died in London on 17 January 1879 and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. He had been the second husband of the actress Isabella Glyn, but the marriage was dissolved in 1874 by her petition. Dallas became a member of the Garrick Club in 1862 and resigned in 1870. (DNB)
